Nantes company to market world’s first vaccine against chikungunya

This is a world first. Biotechnology company Valnevabased in Saint-Herblain and specializing in vaccineshas just received the green light from the European Commission to market its vaccine against chikungunya, the first against this virus in the world.

Officially named IXCHIQ, this single-dose vaccine is dedicated to the prevention of this virus in people over 18 years of age. Its launch on the European market is expected to arrive fin 2024.

Transmitted by mosquitoeschikungunya is responsible for numerous large-scale epidemics across the planet.

Several authorization requests in progress

Valneva does not stop there and continues to try toexport its new vaccine beyond the European UnionPrior to this authorization, the company has already obtained marketing authorization from the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in November 2023 and from Health Canada in June 2024.

An application has since been filed with the UK Medicines and Healthcare products Agency (MHRA) and Brazil’s health agency Anvisa. Valneva says approval in Brazil could come as early as 2024.

In parallel, Valneva is also developing a vaccine against Lyme disease with the laboratory Pfizer – it is currently in the advanced phase of clinical development – ​​and a candidate vaccine against virus Zikaalso spread by mosquitoes.
