forget the 10,000 steps per day, here is the ideal walking distance to take, age by age

Are you a fan of walking but don’t know what goal to set? Here is the ideal number of steps to take each day based on your age.

We all have in mind the goal of 10,000 steps to walk per day. But this figure, recommended by the WHO (World Health Organization), does not take into account each person’s age or needs. Some opt for sports that are likely to make them lose calories and maintain their weight: such as a “lazy” activity that builds muscle without effort, an underrated sport that is making a comeback or a practice deemed “cheesy” that burns calories without we don’t realize it.

Nordic walking is also very popular, or longe-côte for those who live near the sea. But walking, simple, is very effective for being in good physical condition. How far should you walk daily? It depends on your age, and this should guide you in your practice.

Walking: recommended number of steps and duration

The physical and mental benefits of walking are no longer in doubt. Free and accessible to all, it must however be adapted to their abilities and motivation. The idea is to make it a recurring habit and not get hurt. To do this, it is best to set specific goals. Not everyone needs to take 10,000 steps a day. For example, it is recommended for young people from 20 to 30 years old to do brisk walking sessions of 45 minutes to achieve an average of 12,000 steps per day for men and 10,000 for women. And the older you get, the more your number of steps drops according to the PNNS (National Nutrition and Health Program).

For 30 to 40 year oldsso walk 40 minutes every day, to reach 9,000 steps if you are a woman and 10,000 steps if you are a man. For people aged 40 to 60, opt for a daily 35-minute walk with 8,500 steps for women and 9,000 steps for men. Then it is recommended at 60 to 70 years old to walk 30 minutes for a goal of 8,000 steps for both a woman and a man. Between 70 and 80 years oldset a 30-minute daily walk with 5,000 steps in total for both men and women.

Physical activity: what goals should you set?

And finally, over 80s are invited to do 30 minutes a day as well, but with 4,000 steps in their sights, man or woman. Be careful though, it is better to do 2 sessions of 15 minutes each, because physical activity should not exceed 20 minutes at this age. We can therefore determine a general average of 8,000 steps per day to be in good health.

In addition, it is better to focus on the duration of your physical activity rather than the distance to be covered. However, you can calculate it with a connected watch or a smartphone to observe the evolution of your performance and measure your progress then move on to the next step if you wish.
