This year, the day will have a particular importance with an agricultural crisis which has highlighted the many problems that farmers encounter in order to live with dignity while having ecological agricultural practices. Emmanuel Macron’s policy persists in supporting a discounted CAP financing industrial agriculture as a priority, in supporting the deregulation of new GMOs and the renewal of glyphosate, in signing new free trade agreements, in maintaining close relations very strong with the FNSEA-JA and the agro-industrial lobbies, to support the construction of mega-basins… To respond to the agricultural crisis since the beginning of 2024, the government has preferred to follow the supporters of the agro-industry who are demanding a reduction environmental standards (suspension of the Ecophyto plan, reduction in the number of hedges and fallows, facilitation of industrial livestock projects, etc.), rather than seriously taking care of farmers’ income (floor prices, limits on the margins of stakeholders agri-food and mass distribution, etc.) and the preservation of biodiversity.
Furthermore, many victims of pesticides and other agrochemical products are still continuing their fight in court to demand recognition and reparations. This is particularly the case of the victims of glyphosate in France or the United States (still more than 50,000 appeals against Bayer to be judged), of the victims of chlordecone in the Antilles who continue the legal battle for the recognition of those truly responsible for this scandal , or even Tran to Nga on behalf of the victims of Agent Orange manufactured by agrochemical companies during the Vietnam War.
But citizen mobilization is also necessary to fight against North/South inequalities accentuated by this agri-food system, which benefits a few to the detriment of the majority of farmers in France and around the world. Monoculture farms continue to grow in the absence of a multiplication of small mixed-culture farms, nitrogen fertilizers and synthetic pesticides are still massively used, new free trade agreements are signed to promote export agriculture instead of favoring food sovereignty…
Citizens and organizations, more determined than ever to promote another agricultural and food model, more ecological and respectful of life and more socially just for farmers and the rest of the population: let’s be numerous in the streets this Saturday May 25, 2024! Let’s keep the pressure on the players who are jeopardizing our future and show that another path is possible!
