It’s the food to always have at home to benefit your health.

Taking care of your cardiovascular health is essential when we know that in France these diseases are the second cause of mortality, after cancers, but the first cause among women. Heart attack, stroke, heart failure… These diseases all share risk factors, some of which are modifiable. For example, poor diet and high blood sugar levels, responsible for diabetes. Against these two causes, a British doctor has provided a good tip to follow on a daily basis, when preparing meals.

Speaking on his Just One Thing podcast on April 25, Dr Michael Mosley explained that adding a simple ingredient to our diet is enough to protect the heart, reduce blood sugar levels “and even make the skin smoother.” Concretely, we can “sprinkle it on porridge or breakfast cereals, add it to a salad, or in bread or muffins.”

Have you discovered the food in question? These are flax seeds. Available in supermarkets and in health and organic stores, these small brown seeds “have many nutritional powers. They are full of fiber, protein and healthy fatty acids (omega 3, editor’s note)” supports the English doctor. As dietitian-nutritionist Catherine Conan explained to us in a previous article, “Soluble fiber in flax seeds can lower blood cholesterol levels” major risk factor for cardiovascular accidents since it blocks the arteries. Same thing for omega-3s, known to lower bad cholesterol.

Flax seeds also have the advantage of being gluten-free so everyone can benefit from their benefits, they contain around 25% vegetable proteins, a good amount of iron and several minerals such as calcium, magnesium, potassium and phosphorus. Their anti-aging effects are linked to the antioxidants they contain. Small downside however, these seeds can be laxative if abused. The best is to limit yourself to one tablespoon per day. Finally, these seeds are only eaten raw because they do not tolerate heat well.
