PGA considering changing Tour Championship format

The PGA Tour is considering further changes to the format of the Tour Championship used to crown the FedEx Cup champion to better meet the expectations of fans, broadcasters and commercial partners.

Two PGA executives said several concepts are being evaluated, ranging from locating lodges at East Lake in Atlanta to a better way to reward top performances.

The leaders spoke at theAssociated Press on condition of anonymity, since the subject has not been discussed publicly. A person directly involved in the revisions of the ideas said there were no discussions with the player council.

Online media ‘The Athletic’ was the first to report the desire to change the format of the tournament marking the end of the PGA Tour season.

Any changes will have to be approved by the PGA board of directors and officials have stressed that the formula is unlikely to be changed for the 2025 edition.

The circuit would consider presenting a tournament with seeded players, without opting for the match-play formula. Although it is 's most traditional head-to-head competition, the match-play format is less entertaining for spectators, who have fewer golfers to follow as they are eliminated.

One option being explored is the presentation of total stroke playoffs and medal matches, ensuring an 18-hole showdown. Another revised idea is to present matches for the first eight places, with a significant gap for purses.

Scottie Scheffler won the FedEx Cup last year, earning a US$25 million bonus.

Currently, the favorite begins the Tour Championship at 10 under, with a two-shot lead over the second seed and so on down to the last five qualified golfers among the 30, who begin the tournament tied at par .
