Why the prefect of Alpes-Maritimes decided to close all schools this Tuesday

Nurseries, nursery and primary schools, middle and high schools… The Alpes-Maritimes prefecture has decided to close all educational establishments of the department this Tuesday, October 8.

The reason? The placement in orange “rain-flood” alert for the Alpes-Maritimes, from 3 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The measure is extremely rare. This is not the first time that the department has had the same level of vigilance. In his decree published in the evening to record the closure of educational establishments, the prefect gave reasons for his decision.

Fear of a strong impact on the roads

First reason mentioned: the orange vigilance issued by Météo- in the Alpes-Maritimes. The prefect adds a “yellow flood alert for the Amont and middle Var sections”.

He continues with the risk of runoff and overflowing of rivers and their tributaries and who “could significantly impact traffic in the Alpes-Maritimes”.

Finally, the prefect indicates his desire to limit contacts and travel within the department (…) during the event”.

The sudden storm of still in our minds

According to the first forecasts of meteorologists, it is in particular the west of the Alpes-Maritimes which should be the sector most affected by the violent storms which should break out overnight.

Cannes was hit by a sudden and violent storm last Monday September 23. Heavy, very localized precipitation. These “intense rain” had caused impressive flooding in the streets of the city in the morning shortly before the start of the school year and triggered the anger of the mayor of Cannes.

David Lisnard quickly denounced Météo-France and the state services claiming that his commune had not received “no alert”is “no weather models in anticipation”.

This time, the anticipation is maximum.
