We announced it to you almost two weeks ago now and it's now official, Iron Lynx will join the Mercedes-AMG fold from the 2025 WEC season. Two Mercedes-AMG GT3s will be fielded by the Italian structure in the LMGT3 category, which was fielding Huracans this year.
After Ferrari and Porsche in GTE then Lamborghini and Porsche LMGT3, Mercedes-AMG is therefore the fourth manufacturer to work with the team managed by the Piccini brothers. The announcement comes just days before the WEC 2025 entry list is revealed.
???????? Mercedes-AMG enters the FIA WEC and 24h of Le Mans
With the move from Lamborghini to Mercedes-AMG in the Grand Touring category, this leaves very little chance of seeing Lamborghini Iron Lynx next season in Hypercar.
“It’s no secret that we have been very keen for some time to bring the three-pointed star back to Le Manssaid Christoph Sagemüller, president of Mercedes-AMG Motorsport. The 2025 season with the commitment to the FIA WEC is the right time – we are returning to Sarthe after 26 years! Our successful Mercedes-AMG GT3 and the experienced Iron Lynx team form the right duo and we have set a new milestone in our success in customer racing. »
According to our information, Iron Lynx had already attempted an approach with Mercedes and HWA for a Hypercar project before turning to Lamborghini following the German brand's refusal. For its part, Mercedes-AMG had never hidden its desire to race in the WEC and it will therefore be done next year. The firm with the star will be at the start of the 24 Hours of Le Mans next June, 26 years after the unfortunate episode of the CLR.
« I would like to thank the ACO, FIA and Iron Lynx for the in-depth discussions, welcomes Stefan Wendl, head of customer competition at Mercedes-AMG. The commitment to the FIA WEC is extremely positive news for Mercedes-AMG Customer Racing as a whole. The homologation of the Mercedes-AMG GT3 for the LMGT3 class means that all other customer teams now have the opportunity to secure a place on the starting grid for the Le Mans endurance classic. »
The Mercedes-AMG GT3s have nevertheless already driven on the great 24 Hours of Le Mans circuit during Road to Le Mans. Does this arrival of Mercedes-AMG in LMGT3 portend a presence in Hypercar in the medium term? According to our information, the answer is no.
Did you know? You might ask yourself why Mercedes-AMG can run LMGT3s when the brand is not present in Hypercars. This is also the case for Ford and McLaren but Proton Competition for Ford and United Autosports for McLaren are teams loyal to the championship and the brands have a history with Le Mans. However, this is also the case for Iron Lynx and Mercedes-AMG.
