Former driver pushes Aston Martin to sacrifice Fernando Alonso for Max Verstappen

A sea serpent for several weeks, a potential arrival of Max Verstappen at Aston Martin has made Juan Pablo Montoya react. The former pilot already has a strong opinion on the subject.

One week before the Grand Prix of the Americas, which will be the next stop on the F1 calendar, the future of Max Verstappen continues to fuel speculation. It must be said that for several months now, Red Bull’s situation has not been reassuring. The Dutch driver can no longer win a single race, and could be dethroned by Lando Norris, while McLaren has taken control of the manufacturers’ standings.

Max Verstappen and Aston Martin, an inevitable marriage?

Furthermore, the structure has been greatly weakened by major departures, in particular that of the father of the single-seaters who put Red Bull on the scene, Adrian Newey. The Briton made the strong choice to join Aston Martin, automatically weakening his former employer. Since then, the rumors sending Verstappen to his own British team have gained strength. If the Dutchman is still under contract until 2027, he has a clause in his contract that could disrupt his future.

Toto Wolff and Mercedes are already pushing hard and would be ideal candidates to welcome him, the team showing real hopes for the new regulations from 2026. But with the reinforcement of Adrian Newey, and above all significant investments for all levels, Aston Martin is the fashionable project. Problem, the line-up is complete.

Juan Pablo Montoya ready to fire Fernando Alonso

Despite lackluster performances, Lance Stroll is untouchable in the team, his father Lawrence being at the head of the team. For his part, Fernando Alonso extended his commitment until 2026, thereby proving his involvement and his assurance regarding the project put in place. So, if Verstappen were to find himself free, Aston Martin would have to make a strong choice.

For the former Colombian pilot, Juan Pablo Montoya, this choice seems obvious, as he indicated to Gambling Zone :

“Fernando is not a long-term option. When they have to make a decision, they will say to themselves “We have Honda, we have Newey, why not go for Max Verstappen?” “

On paper, the choice does not suffer from any dispute between two exceptional drivers who are sixteen years apart. However, Aston Martin would find itself in a difficult position. For several years, Fernando Alonso has contributed significantly to the development of the single-seater, and has been fully involved in the 2026 project.

At 43, a premature separation would undoubtedly spell the end of his career in F1. Aston Martin would then be seen as the gravedigger of one of the greatest drivers of all time. But it’s hard not to say that the game would be worth it…
