Formula 1 | Verstappen expects ‘even tougher’ weekend in Singapore

Red Bull will be hoping to bounce back from a disappointing weekend in Baku, where Max Verstappen finished fifth. The team has prioritised performance for this weekend’s Singapore GP by scrapping its special livery, and the Dutch driver will be hoping to be closer to his rivals than in Azerbaijan, even if Singapore is not smiling on the Austrian team.

“We have learned from our mistakes last week in Baku and we can try a few things different this week in Singapore. Marina Bay is a nice circuit, but we expect it to be even more challenging, as it always has been for us,” Verstappen said.

“The racing is usually quite close here and it’s obviously very hot and humid. The changes we made in Baku were positive and we were going in the right direction; we think we know what we can do better and of course we need to make sure we optimise the set-up.”

“It will be important to keep control of the car a little more at low speeds so that it doesn’t jump all over the place, which should help us a lot. Finally, we continue to fight for the championship: we win and lose as a team and we will continue to push and try to come back stronger.”

“Converting rhythm into podium”

Sergio Perez was on course for a podium in Baku when he clashed with Carlos Sainz, but he is keeping his pace over the weekend as a positive: “It was a real shame for the whole team in Baku because we had worked hard to get a more competitive car on track and it really showed.”

“We’ve had the pace throughout the weekend and now it’s about converting that pace into a podium in Singapore. The car has shown it’s capable with this package, so we need to get the set-up right throughout the weekend and execute our qualifying and race plan perfectly.”

“I’ve won in Singapore before in tricky conditions and as everyone knows I love street circuits, there’s something special about a night race and this is probably the best one there is.”

“On Sunday night I want us to be able to say that we did our best to win this race and that is what we will focus on as soon as we start work in Singapore.”
