Last Sunday, Camille Basset discovered the high international level, at least in cyclo-cross, before doing the same on the road for her first Junior year. Present with the French team in Besançon for her first round of the World Cup, she came away with a Top 20 (see ranking). “It’s nice, I didn’t put pressure on myself because I was going there to discover. That’s how we have the best races. I’m happy”. The Breton is in her place. “I tried to get the best start possible to be in front. I did it at my own pace, I tried to move up as many places as possible and finish as well as possible. I came for the Top 25 so it's even better”.
It was difficult to hope for better while being in traffic and among opponents who were falling like dominoes. “I was in the peloton, we couldn't get back up too much because there were people everywhere. I tried to avoid the girls who fell in front of me, then I managed to get back up, I saw Zélie (Lambert) not far in front but I wanted to manage and not make a first lap too fast.. Present over the four Coupe de France weekends where she finished 4th three times, her form is increasingly optimal. “For the moment I'm slowly building up pressure. At the start of the winter, I made a Top 10 in the first Coupe de France, and I ended up finishing 4th in the end”.
From there to claiming other selections for the next rounds of the World Cup, Camille Basset is not sure. “I don’t think I can have other selections, I was taken there because it was in France but I don’t think I will be taken in the future”. On the other hand, she will be in Pontchâteau for the French Championship, where it will nevertheless be difficult to upset Lise Revol, Jeanne Duterne or Lison Desprez who won the treble in Besançon. “Making a Top 5 would be good. I have never been to Pontchâteau, I will discover the D-Day. But it is my ambition to succeed in the French Championship and we will see what happens next”. Both cross-country and on the road, Camille Basset has everything to discover in terms of her abilities.
