During the general assembly, the Couserannais cycle touring club debated road safety issues and proposed concrete solutions to improve traffic conditions for cyclists on local roads.
The president of the departmental cycle tourism committee, Bernard Girard, Patricia Marrot, member of the sports commission at the municipality of Saint-Girons, and Anne-Marie Dubouch, co-president of the Municipal Sports and Physical Education Office (OMSEP), participated in the general assembly.
Two major topics were discussed there. After the presentation of the various reports and the renewal of the office, rich discussions highlighted the main concern of athletes: safety on the roads of Couseran.
At the national level, a decree of November 27, 2024 now prohibits the use of a flashing rear light on bicycles, requiring that it be fixed to avoid an alleged risk of dazzling. Participants pointed out that the flashing function is much more visible and were opposed to this measure. A national petition has already collected numerous signatures in favor of its repeal.
A local request was also expressed regarding the dangerousness of the road between Saint-Lizier and Saint-Girons. The cyclists present strongly hope for the creation of a greenway providing a secure connection on this route, which is very busy with cars and trucks.
They proposed a low-cost solution: make the old railway line passable up to the Saint-Lizier roundabout, then take the small service along the left bank of the Salat. This route would avoid any risk of accident.
The club, led by its president Michel Oundjian, is available to the elected officials in charge of this project to quickly design a safe and economical connection. Soft mobility, particularly by bicycle, remains a mode of travel particularly appreciated by Couserannais.
