The dance show “Murmuration” arrives in Beaulieu (Lausanne) for three performances from January 24 to 25, 2025. Since the premiere in April 2023, the show has been seen by more than 150,000 spectators. Meeting with Sadeck Berrabah, his 35-year-old French choreographer.
What made you want to create your own show?
Basically, I am a hip-hop dancer. And in this mentality, you have to have your identity. So, I think it built me even when I was young. But I was also drawn to the stage and wanted a longer format to really have time to say what I had to say. And I’m a nature lover, so I really wanted to pay homage to that, while putting my DNA into it, namely the body lines.
Why this name “Murmuration”?
It is an international term to represent flocks of birds. Originally, I didn’t know what it was called and I looked it up on the internet. I’ve always been fascinated by that: seeing the shapes it takes in the air, a bit like waves. I wanted to understand what they were doing and why. It inspired me and I made a show out of it.
The show encourages you to deepen your self-knowledge and promotes (re)connection between each being. Why combine these elements?
-Because we are all human. Today, there are a lot of problems on the planet: some are trying to divide us. It’s something that touches me a lot. I really want to bring people together. This is why I am very happy to have with me all colors, all origins, all religions. It was very important for me to have this inclusion. This show is truly a hymn to nature and humanity.
Do you need to have knowledge of dance to fully grasp the meaning of the show or can a novice audience find what they are looking for?
I wouldn’t necessarily say you need dance knowledge, but you need self-understanding. It is a concept based on the lines of the body. There are many parallels with the Fibonacci sequence and the golden ratio. It is everything that is inside of us, everything that makes us up as a human body. And there are also energies. You really have to understand that. I think everyday people can understand the show, there’s no need to be a dancer.
For “Murmuration”, Sadeck Berrabah worked with his brother. The latter composed the music for the show. This collaboration was obvious for the choreographer. “I started dancing with him. We were in college and we were teaching each other the steps. We really grew up together there. Then, life meant that we separated: I continued dancing and he got more into musical production. But since he made music while understanding dance, it was really obvious to me,” he explained to us.
