In the company of her partner, Marc-Édouard Vlasic: host and journalist Frédérique Guay talks about her new life in California

Every morning, Frédérique Guay still does what she calls her “press review”. She browses the sites of Quebec and American daily newspapers, as she has done since the start of her career. Except that the setting is now very different: the host and journalist now does it from a suburb of San Jose, where she is based with her partner, Sharks defenseman Marc-Édouard Vlasic.

About a year and a half ago, Frédérique Guay made the decision to move to California, with her boyfriend. Under the hot sun? No, not really. Willow Glen, this suburb of San Jose, is located in the northern part of the state. “This morning, I went to walk my dog, and it must have been 3 or 4 degrees,” she points out. It made noise when I breathed.”

Head of station on weekend mornings at LCN, presenter of CF Montreal matches, Frédérique then took a sabbatical, even if this environment and the adrenaline that accompanies it still made her enjoy it.

The sports and news buff admits: abandoning these long hours of live for a quieter life was not so easy at first. “I’m a workaholic! she says. I like it when things move, so it was a bit of a shock at first. But the good news is that I can sleep eight hours at night, rather than three or four.”

Frédérique Guay was the host of the broadcast of the National Bank Montreal Open in August 2024.

Frédérique admits it: her life revolves a lot around her partner’s schedule, regulated like clockwork like that of any NHL player. Training, naps, meals, in short, the pre-match routine.

“I like to call myself his ‘spaghetti sauce attendant,’” she laughs.

A favorite beach

When Marc-Édouard is not playing – he missed the first half of the season to treat an upper-body injury – he and Frédérique take the opportunity to visit the San Jose area, often in the company of their dog, Piper.

The 39-year-old anchor fell in love with Carmel-by-the-Sea, a magnificent beach where four-legged friends are allowed and free to run around as they please. A heavenly place that is worth a detour on Google Images, if you can’t afford the plane ticket.

The rest of the time, she and her partner like to play knock. In fact, they are both very competitive, especially with each other, laughs Frédérique Guay: “We play billiards, tennis. We’re always in a mode where one has to win.”

People talk about hockey in the car

Otherwise, when the Sharks are away, she takes the opportunity to travel a little too. Particularly in Florida, where his parents are based. Or she does activities with the other spouses of the players, whom she hosted at her home during the holidays.

And there are, of course, game nights. “I sit in a section of the arena, quite close to the ice, always on the side where Marc-Édouard defends,” she points out. I watch each of his sequences. And in the car afterwards, we talk about it.”

In two games (probably Saturday), Vlasic will also step on NHL ice for a 1300e match. A feat of arms that makes his girlfriend “very proud”.

Targets on the radio

But this role and this life will not last forever, explains Frédérique. The lovers have a plan: at the end of Vlasic’s hockey career, whose contract with the Sharks expires at the end of the 2025-2026 season, they will return to Quebec.

At that point, it will be her turn to dedicate herself to her career again.

Contractually, Frédérique Guay will no longer be linked to TVA Sports shortly. But she wants to remain faithful to the channel to which she has been linked since its launch 12 years ago.

Moreover, she carried out a few mandates last summer: hosting the National Bank Open, covering the Euro, on site in Germany. And she will continue to do so, depending on what is offered to her.

If TV still excites her as much, Frédérique explains that she also has other media interests, such as radio. She dreams of co-hosting a show in which she could touch on all subjects, both current affairs and sports. She would even like to do it right away, if the technical means allowed it and the project interested her.

If she has to wait until her eventual return to Quebec, however, Marc-Édouard can then become her spaghetti sauce attendant… “Even if he risks being tired of eating it at this point,” she jokes. journalist.

Macklin Celebrini is a good guy

Frédérique Guay has not been able to see her partner play much this season, he who returned to the game on January 2, after treating an upper body injury that has plagued him since the summer. But she was able to see the nugget Macklin Celebrini, first pick in the last draft, in action and she was quite impressed both by his performances on the ice and by his maturity off it.

“He’s really a down-to-earth person,” she notes, having worked with him during a few team events, including the Halloween party.

Moreover, even if she did not arrive in San Jose in time to experience the good years of the Sharks, Frédérique points out that the atmosphere is good at their home, despite the recent difficult seasons. A phenomenon she attributes to their strong fan base, even if the amphitheater isn’t always full lately.

Always on his bucket list

Frédérique is not just a sports girl. She is also a current affairs enthusiast, who was chomping at the bit to not be behind a microphone when The Journal spoke to him on Monday, the day of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s resignation.

But even though she has covered several major sporting events over the years, she still has one on her list. bucket list: Wimbledon, the most legendary tennis tournament, and the garden of Roger Federer, an athlete for whom she has never hidden her attachment.

Moreover, two years after the retirement of the Swiss Maestro, Frédérique Guay does not hide it: she is still experiencing a little mourning. Even if she doesn’t hate seeing Carlos Alcaraz at work. “He’s the only one, at the moment, who gives the same kind of emotions as Federer. Who gives the impression that even if he falls behind, he can come back, because it’s a fight against himself.”
