Saudi Arabia’s accession to the Brics group is still in the study phase, more than a year after its invitation to join this regional bloc, said the Saudi Minister of Economy and Planning, Faisal bin Fadel Al-Ibrahim.
In press statements on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Mr. Al-Ibrahim stressed that Saudi Arabia, invited to join the BRICS group as well as several multi-party organizations, is looking into the review of the various aspects of this file before making a decision.
The Brics are a group of ten countries: Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Iran, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia and Ethiopia. They initially included the first four countries.
A possible accession of Saudi Arabia, the world’s leading oil producer, is likely to consolidate the economic influence of this regional group where major suppliers and consumers of energy exist in the world.
