Apple Intelligence further encroaches on iPhone storage

Launched (not yet in all countries) last year with the iOS 18.1 mobile system on iPhone, Apple Intelligence gained weight after the iOS 18.2 update. If Apple’s AI initially required 4 GB of free space on compatible devices (iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and the entire iPhone 16 range), it now requires almost twice as much space on smartphones ( as well as on iPad and Mac), namely 7 GB. This increase is explained by the fact that many AI features have been added (the creation of personalized Genmoji emojis, the integration of ChatGPT in Siri, image creation with Image Playground, visual intelligence, etc.). Additionally, as a reminder, in compliance with privacy requirements, most Apple Intelligence features run directly on the device. Thus, the user’s personal data is not transmitted to a remote server for processing.

Problem: It is not possible to disable these features to reclaim storage space, and the situation could get worse. Apple Intelligence could take up even more space with the iOS 18.4 update expected in April 2024 which is expected to bring major changes to the Siri voice assistant, according to 9to5mac. The specialized website estimates that this update could reach a size of 10 GB. As for the intermediate version iOS 18.3, it should be limited to the deployment of fixes.
