Demi Moore delivered a powerful speech as she received her first Golden Globe on January 5 (25) in Los Angeles.

The 62-year-old actress revealed she felt at the lowest point in her career before landing a role in The Substance, a film which won her the Best Actor award at the awards ceremony yesterday.

The Ghost star beat out her colleagues Amy Adams, Cynthia Erivo, Karla Sofía Gascón, Zendaya and Mikey Madison, nominated in this same category, with this award. From the stage at Beverly Hilton, where she gave her acceptance speech, Demi Moore insisted she was “in shock” to finally be recognized with an individual award for her work.

“I really didn’t expect this,” she began. “I’m in shock right now. I’ve been doing this job for a long time, more than 45 years, and this is the first time I’ve won anything as an actress.”

The actress had however been nominated for a Golden Globe twice in the past for her performances in Ghost (1991) and If These Walls Could Talk (1997).

“I am so moved and grateful,” she continued. “Thirty years ago, a producer told me I was a ‘popcorn actress.’ At the time, I understood that this was not something I had the right to have. I could make films that were successful, that made a lot of money, but I couldn’t be recognized. I believed it and it impacted me over time, to the point that I thought, a few years ago, that maybe that was it. Maybe I was complete, maybe I did what I was supposed to do.”

However, Coralie Fargeat’s film and its “magical” scenario lifted Demi Moore at a time when she felt at the lowest point in her career.

“The universe told me, ‘It’s not over.’ I am very grateful to Coralie for trusting me to play this woman. To Margaret (Qualley) for being the other half of myself,” she added, before offering the audience one last lesson of wisdom. “A woman told me: ‘Know that you will never be enough. But you can know your worth if you put down the measuring stick.” This is why, today, I celebrate this event as a marker of my fullness and the love that animates me. For the gift of doing something I love and reminding me that I belong, thank you very much.”

Demi Moore wasn’t the only one to win an award for the first time despite a storied film career. Zoe Saldaña won her very first Golden Globe, in the best actress category, for her role in Emilia Pérez. The star then thanked her family, her team and her colleagues also named – Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande, Felicity Jones, Margaret Qualley and Isabella Rossellini.

She also praised director Jacques Audiard: “Thank you very much for trusting me to play Rita, you are a person that I admire very much.”
