The musical by French director Jacques Audiard won four statuettes on Sunday January 5 at the Golden Globes ceremony in Beverly Hills. It was notably crowned best international film.
Emilia Perez has assumed its status as favorite of the 82nd Golden Globes. Nominated ten times, Jacques Audiard’s musical gleaned four statuettes on Sunday January 5, including the most prestigious, that of best comedy but also those of best international film, best actress in a supporting role for Zoe Saldaña, and of the best song.
Jacques Audiard’s film, which traces the gender transition of a Mexican drug trafficker, is the first French feature film to be titled “best comedy” at the Golden Globes since The Artist, in 2012. “JI never had a sister, I think that’s why I made this film. If there were more sisters, maybe the world would be a better place. In these troubled times, I would like Emilia to be a light. And may it also be a comforting caress for all those who are worried, an exhortation to keep their heads held high“, reacted on stage Jacques Audiard, in comments relayed by The Parisian.
“The Brutalist”, the other big winner of the Golden Globes
French composers Camille and Clément Ducol, authors of the soundtrack for “Emilia Perez”, walked away with the Golden Globe for best song for “El Mal”.
Another big winner of the evening, The Brutalist won three statuettes: best dramatic film, best director for Brady Corbet and best actor for Adrien Brody. For her part, Demi Moore received the Golden Globe for best actress in a comedy or musical for her role in The Substancedirected by French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat. While the Golden Globes are considered a springboard towards the Oscars, which will announce their nominations on January 17, Emilia Perez could well experience a new coronation in the coming weeks.
