Will Meghan Markle revive the skinny jean trend?

After renouncing their royal titles as Duke and Duchess of Sussex and stepping aside from the British royal family in January 2020, with her husband Prince Harry, Meghan Markle suspended the Instagram account she maintained. The 43-year-old American actress, who became famous for playing the elegant lawyer Rachel Zane in the series Suitsopted for a casual chic look to make a comeback on the social network.

A casual chic style that we adopt without hesitation

This Wednesday, January 1, Meghan Markle’s comeback on Instagram had a global impact. She reactivated her account soberly called “@meghan”, which she had created in 2022, with a first post of her on a beach in Santa Barbara, not far from their villa in Montecito in California. Before adding the next day, a second publication announcing her new Netflix series entitled “With love, Meghan”, broadcast from January 15.

In the short 30-second video, shot by her husband Harry according to fans, we see her, happy, running on the sand before writing “2025” facing the Pacific Ocean. She is dressed in a long linen shirt and skinny jeans, a monochrome look in immaculate white, which – paradoxically – has attracted a lot of attention.

Barefoot on the beach, Lilibet and Archie’s mother wears only one accessory: her 18-carat gold Cartier bracelet. If some predicted the certain end of skinny pants – a very controversial piece that still divides the fashion world – Meghan Markle resurrects them and confirms that they are a safe bet. Killing two birds with one stone, these ultra-tight jeans, popularized at the end of the 90s and extremely famous in the early 2000s, are also making a comeback.

On the catwalks, the skinny has discreetly regained its stripes in the fall-winter 2024-2025 collections. These include the house of Celine, where designer Hedi Slimane has been incorporating it into his sketches for several years, and the Italian labels Miu Miu, Schiaparelli and Versace, which are banking on its Y2K potential in denim or leather versions. It remains to be seen whether with this stylistic boost from Meghan Markle, skinny jeans will be able to replace baggy jeans this year.
