Photos of Felipe and Letizia from Spain were revealed on Wednesday. These photos, taken by the famous photographer Annie Leibovitz, will be shown to the public as part of an exhibition at the Bank of Spain, until March 29.
She has photographed the biggest stars, but also Queen Elizabeth II on several occasions. American photographer Annie Leibovitz immortalized the Spanish royal couple Felipe VI and Letizia. The photos, shown as part of an exhibition at the Bank of Spain from November 27, were unveiled on Wednesday.
Entitled “The Tyranny of Chronos”, the exhibition presents “a selection of historical clocks that the institution carefully preserves, as well as portraits taken by photographer Annie Leibovitz of their majesties the King and Queen of Spain”, according to the Bank of Spain.
Hollywood star
The photos of the sovereign and the queen were taken at the beginning of the year, on February 7, 2024, indicates the daily El Pais, which specifies that these are not official portraits, but an order from the Bank of Spain.
In these two photos, with the very characteristic atmosphere of the photographer’s work, Felipe is in full military attire, while Letizia wears a vintage Balenciaga dress and a fuchsia cape. Without a tiara or crown, she looks like a Hollywood star. The photos of the king and queen were taken in the Gasparini Room in the Alcazar Palace.
“For the artist, it was the most interesting place in the palace. And for us, this room is significant, because it was built by Charles III, during whose reign the Bank of San Carlos was founded, predecessor of the Bank of Spain”, explains for El Pais, Yolanda Romero Gómez, art historian and head of conservation and heritage at the Bank of Spain.
These photos contrast with the recent images of the king and queen meeting flood victims in the Valencia region. Greeted at first with insults and mud throwing, Felipe and Letizia returned to the scene of the deadly floods and received a better welcome.
Felipe VI: ridiculed by the victims of the floods, how to explain the unprecedented reaction of the Spaniards?
Annie Leibovitz painted the portrait of Queen Elizabeth several times. Alone, in full dress, or more casually, with her husband Prince Philip, with her daughter Princess Anne, or even with some of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Each shot of Annie Leibovitz is an event. The photographer immortalized Demi Moore pregnant and naked, Mikhail Gorbachev, and Leonardo DiCaprio with a swan around his neck.
