Muse’s Soa on RuPaul’s Drag Race Global All Stars: “It’s the Olympics of Drag!”

How were you chosen to participate in this All Stars version of Drag Race?

I was simply contacted by the production. We are twelve queens coming from a different country: Mexico, Philippines, Brazil, United States…. We all arrive with a different drag. Some are very show-off, show girls, others more intellectual. There are different visions of this art. It’s interesting.

We found the cult events of the program?

Yes of course! There will be a sewing challenge, comedy, group, dance, singing…. It’s the Olympic Games of drag!

What did you want to bring to the program?

I am of French origin and I come from . I don’t only connect to the history of . On the contrary! I also try to refer to black personalities who lived in France. For the first episode for example, I arrive at a very Joséphine Baker and Lisette Malidor inspiration who was the first Martinican to be a revue leader. I will try to be constantly connected to my origins. I also create a form of Afro-futurism, by bringing together all my knowledge whether it is in cabaret, contemporary dance, singing…

Muse’s Soa on RuPaul’s Drag Race Global All Stars: “A chance to get my name out there”

How did you experience this international adventure?

Honestly, I felt legitimate. During the first season of Drag Race France, I didn’t show everything about myself. This All Stars version was an opportunity to make myself known, for people to see my signature. My drag, which isn’t necessarily definable, is connected to my emotions.

Will the competition be tough?

Yes, because I found myself face to face with real personalities, with very pronounced drag. It’s not a joke, you had to show your teeth! But it was great, it’s an extraordinary adventure.

Had the other Queens heard of the French version?

Yes! I think we don’t realize how much the first season of Drag Race France was seen around the world and the impact it had on the art of drag. Especially since it was a season focused on sisterhood, which did good. There was a lot of love and sweetness.

Soa de Muse: her meeting with RuPaul

You met RuPaul, THE reference in drag for the general public…

He did indeed pave the way for drag queens, in terms of media coverage, thanks to his reality TV. But drag existed long before him! It also exists in France in another way, thanks in particular to the Madame Arthur cabaret. The first time, it’s impressive to find yourself face to face with him. That being said, it’s okay (Laughs). He’s a bit like the mother who’s going to keep repeating “you know, at your age…” But that’s also why we love him.

Will you go far in this All Stars version?

I can’t tell you anything, but know that I didn’t let myself be pushed around…

What did you think of Thomas Jolly’s “drag” painting at the Olympic Opening Ceremony?

I wasn’t surprised. Art brings softness into this brutal world… It was beautiful to see that. We, the drags, are here to make you go on vacation from yourselves!
