TGV: Identity simplifies train ticket checks

The Identity application, which allows you to create your virtual identity card, has a new option to include SNCF train tickets. A test is in progress.

There was a time when the digital identity card led to friction between the SNCF and the France Identity application. But that was before. The validity of the application was admitted by the French National Railway Company during checks on trains. It was last spring. And recently, it has been possible to ask more from France Identity.

Indeed, this Monday, January 20, 2025 marks the start of an experiment on TGV Inoui trains, pending further generalization: the possibility of only presenting the application to controllers, not to reveal its identity, but as proof of the good possession of the transport ticket to travel.

A beta test, reserved for TGV Inoui

For the moment, the test has a restricted scope: it is limited to the TGV Inoui lines and requires the use of the application in its beta version. According to France Identity estimates, large-scale deployment of the option is a matter of weeks, time to gather enough feedback and make possible technical adjustments.

The train ticket appears in the form of a QR code that controllers must scan with their device. Be careful, however: checking your transport ticket with France Idabilité can only be done if the first name, last name and date of birth were provided when purchasing the train ticket. It is specified that this QR Code is encrypted to protect it.

Use of the France Identity application is absolutely not obligatory. If you do not wish to use it, whether to provide your identity or present your transport ticket, you can absolutely present your physical documents. The idea of this feature is to save time and have fewer papers to take out.
