She knows how to take off, fly and return to the mechanical arms of the launch tower. The Starship rocket has once again successfully completed its return to Earth test. The adventure of the upper floor, on the other hand, failed: it disintegrated in the atmosphere. Despite everything, SpaceX shared the most beautiful photos of the test.
SpaceX therefore reiterated its performance. On the night of January 16 to 17, the American company once again managed to catch the first stage of its Starship rocket, just before it hit the ground. The immense metal tube, 71 meters high, maneuvered to fit between the steel arms of the launch tower, Mechazilla.
This is the second time that the company has managed to catch the first floor – called Super Heavy – with its tower. The first time was on October 13, during the fifth test. Initially, SpaceX would have liked to repeat this feat from the sixth test, in November, but the conditions were not met. The stage then ended its course in the ocean.
On the other hand, the upper floor was much less successful during this seventh attempt. It disintegrated in the sky, transforming the vehicle into a sort of shower of shooting stars. A poetic vision, but problematic for civil aviation: certain aircraft were alerted and had to distance themselves from the affected areas.
An investigation has been launched, and corrections will have to be made on the Starship – bad luck for SpaceX, it was the first flight of “block 2”, a completely new generation of the upper stage and incorporating numerous improvements. While waiting to draw conclusions, SpaceX has nevertheless shared splendid photos of its test.
