After the enormous success of Longlegsdirector Oz Perkins is already making his return with the horror film The Monkeytaken from Stephen King.
Oz Perkins’ productions have not always had the chance to enter cinemas, like February sorti en DTV en 2015, et I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the Housedirectly on Netflix in 2016. That said, Gretel & Hansel had a small success with 22 million dollars raked in for only 5 million budget. Enough to give ideas to Neon which, four years later, relied heavily on the marketing of the horror thriller Longlegs for its theatrical release.
As a result, the film was a hit at the box office, accumulating $127 million (for less than a $10 million budget). No wonder then that Neon also plays a lot with the promotion of The Monkeythe new Oz Perkins film adapted from the eponymous book by Stephen King. Before knowing whether the film about an evil toy will convince audiences around the world, the first opinions are in. Tweet review.
a monkey who doesn’t make a face
“The Monkey is a superb explosion of blood! A succession, almost non-stop, of joyfully violent murder scenes that left a few “shit” on my part. I loved how quickly Oz Perkins managed to do his own version of Stephen King’s book. I like some of his films more than others, but this is something I often appreciate about his work in general. He always seems to have a clear, bold vision that he executes without hesitation. » Perry Nemiroff – Collider
“Loved The Monkey. Oz Perkins has been one of the most exciting genre filmmakers since his debut and his latest film is about as good as you can hope for in cinema – funny, scary, poignant and so much fun. A rare film that can be compared to Gremlins in terms of dizzying chaos. » Drew Taylor – The Wrap
“The Monkey is one of the craziest horror films I’ve seen in years! Osgood Perkins goes all out in an insane film about the consequences of his actions. A bloody, gruesome and hilarious film that tries to outdo itself with murder after murder. » Junior Felix – TheHashtagShow
“The Monkey is a small summit of cinema! A sadistic, chaotic and crazy bloodbath! A sort of Final Destination that contains some of the biggest kills I’ve ever seen. The creativity behind each murder is expertly conceived and executed. Osgood gave us a masterpiece! » Frederick Nuti – Bloody Disgusting

“The Monkey is an absolutely brilliant film. Both savagely funny and savagely bloody, it’s a moment of pure gory fun that establishes Osgood Perkins as a master of horror. You’ll howl with laughter and cover your eyes in equal measure. I loved it. » Joey Magidson – Awards Radar
“The Monkey by Oz Perkins is a delight. It’s completely crazy! A crazy ride high on cocaine. Elegant, stylized and sadistic. Murders and thrills, like Rube Goldberg machines and deaths inspired by Final Destination. Theo James’ impassive delivery impresses. » Courtney Howard – Variety
“The Monkey is one of those horror films that I will watch over and over again for the rest of my life. Dark and brutal enough that calling it a “horror comedy” seems inappropriate, but it’s also the movie I’ve laughed the hardest at at the cinema in years. A new classic Stephen King adaptation is born. » Jake Hamilton – Reel Blend
“I’ve had the chance to see The Monkey several times now, and it gets funnier every time I see it. Oz Perkins Gets Tales from the Crypt and Creepshow via Morgan & Wong [scénaristes du premier Destination finale, ndlr] : a wicked, macabre horror comedy about the impersonal fate that awaits us all. » Bill Bria – SlashFilm
“Quite honestly, The Monkey is one of the funniest horror comedies I’ve seen in a long time. It’s intelligent, perfectly paced and the gore is really on point. I will never look at a toy again. Just… not at all anymore. » Jeff Ewing – Dexerto
The first returns around The Monkey are therefore rave, most depicting a skillful mix between crazy gore, hilarious humor and a good dose of anxiety. Elements which are rather reassuring, but which must be put into perspective. The first opinions of Longlegs were just as positive before the release, but perhaps too much in relation to the film itself, which was much less “revolutionary” than what was claimed by some.
In any case, we can’t wait to jump into The Monkeywhich should at least offer us blood, murder and a little madness. In France, it will be in cinemas from February 19, 2025.
