Three Swiss companies are still among the 100 most capitalized listed companies in the world at the end of 2024. The food giant Nestlé as well as the pharmaceutical companies Roche and Novartis retained their place in the ranking, but lost ground.

(Keystone-ATS) Nestlé even fell to 53rd position, whereas it was 27th twelve months earlier, the auditing and consulting company EY said on Friday. The Vevey liner has had a difficult year, marked in particular by the sudden departure of boss Mark Schneider at the end of August and his immediate replacement by Laurent Freixe. Nestlé’s share price plunged 23.2% in 2024.
The misfortunes of the former Swiss largest capitalization benefited Roche, which outperformed Nestlé. The Basel pharmaceutical giant nevertheless fell to 46th place in the world, from 43rd in 2023. Its rival Novartis lost 13 places and landed in 66th position.
-At the end of the past year, Apple, Nvidia and Microsoft were at the top of the most valuable companies in the world, according to EY. A majority of companies in the top 100 – or 62 – are also American groups.
To find other Swiss companies, you have to go down to 146 to find the insurer Chubb Limited. The automation and electrification giant ABB ranks 165th (177th in 2023), the major bank UBS is 169th (144th), the luxury group Richemont is in 185th position (180th) and Zurich Insurance rises to 192nd. rank (198th).
The top 500 in the ranking of the world’s largest capitalizations includes 15 Swiss companies in total. Eight have gone backwards and seven have progressed. Holcim (351st), Glencore (353rd) Lonza Group (452nd) Swiss Re (463rd), Alcon (464th), Givaudan (486th), Garmin (496th) complete the list.
