Domestic fuel oil, essential for heating many homes, is seeing its prices increase with the arrival of low temperatures. A situation due to economic and seasonal phenomena which weigh on consumers.

This Thursday, January 2, ordinary fuel oil is priced at 1.125 euros per liter, according to the specialized site Prixfioul.fr. As for premium fuel oil, it is sold on average at 1.144 euros per liter. Whether for ordinary or superior, the prices recorded this Thursday are up by around three euros per 1,000 liters compared to the prices recorded at the end of the year.

For its part, the Fioulreduc site displays an average price of 1.118 euros per liter. According to this online comparator also, today’s rate is up five euros per 1,000 liters compared to Tuesday. Finally, on the Fioulmarket site, fuel oil is sold for 1,124 euros on average for a purchase of 1,000 liters. Also on this specialized platform, today’s price is up several euros compared to the day before.

Where to find the cheapest domestic fuel oil in this Thursday?

According to the Fioulreduc.fr platform, which compares the prices of domestic fuel oil between regions, it is in Franche-Comté that we find the lowest price in France this Thursday, with 1,082 euros on average for a purchase of 1,000 liters. Conversely, it is in Champagne-Ardenne that the price is the highest in the entire country, with 1,149 euros for an order of 1000 liters. Thus, the difference in prices between Franche-Comté and Champagne-Ardenne amounts to 67 euros for an order of 1000 liters.

The increase in domestic fuel prices is mainly explained by a sharp increase in demand and increasing prices on the oil markets. With the arrival of winter periods, households increase their heating consumption, which intensifies the demand for this fuel. This seasonal pressure, combined with a global economic recovery after several years of slowdown, is fueling increased demand for petroleum products, including heating oil. This situation creates an imbalance between supply and demand, pushing prices up, especially in regions where stocks are limited.

At the same time, world crude oil prices, which directly influence the cost of domestic fuel oil, remain at high levels. According to data from Prixdubaril, Brent from the North Sea, a global benchmark, has stabilized at $74.92 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI), the main American index, is at $72.02. These prices reflect a situation where geopolitical tensions, production reductions in certain producing countries and growing demand are keeping the price of a barrel high. These increases have a direct impact on the price of fuel oil, thus impacting consumer budgets, which are particularly sensitive to these fluctuations during periods of high consumption.
