This is a symbolic milestone for electric vehicles in China. Half of new cars sold in the Middle Kingdom can now be powered by batteries, according to statistics from Bloomberg Intelligence dating from October 2024. If the pace of recent years continues, the share of thermal engines in the new registrations in Xi Jinping’s country will quickly be reduced to dust.

Everything has indeed changed in less than five years. In January 2020, more than 97% of automobile sales in this state still involved gasoline or diesel models. China was then late in its energy transition compared to other Western countries, particularly in Scandinavia.
