Sales: does the political climate explain their catastrophic start?

Sales: does the political climate explain their catastrophic start?

The tense political climate, combined with gloomy weather, has consequences on French consumption.

The summer sales launched this Wednesday are off to a disastrous start.

But for those who want to take advantage of it, it’s the year of good deals.

Taking time with your customers, advising them, is a luxury for a first weekend of sales. And for good reason, there is almost no one, as we see in the 20H report above. Stocks are not moving, which the traders met by our team attribute to heavy political news. Some find themselves obliged to strike hard from the start: -40% and even -60% from the first markdown.

Big markdowns from the start

“It’s unprecedented, since I’ve been in ready-to-wear, it’s the first time that I’ve seen the first week of sales start with -60%”, deplores Alice-Chantal Brunstein, saleswoman in a women’s ready-to-wear boutique, on TF1. This observation is shared by a customer, who is delighted to benefit from it.

The markdowns are displayed in large letters in the windows. But local residents do not pay attention to them, their minds are still elsewhere, to the early legislative elections of June 30. Added to this are consumer habits already disrupted by the late summer, which has pushed back the need for light clothing. However, for the sales to be successful, it must happen in the first 10 or 15 days, according to specialists.
