The energy transition is running out of steam on a global scale

The global energy transition towards a fairer, safer and more sustainable system “continues to advance, but has lost momentum in the face of growing uncertainty around the world”, according to a new report from the World Economic Forum (WEF). ), published Wednesday.

The slowdown in the overall pace of the energy transition is due to economic volatility, increased geopolitical tensions and technological change, explains the report which uses the Energy Transition Index (ETI) to assess the performance of current energy systems from 120 countries.

In its 14th edition entitled “Fostering an efficient energy transition in 2024”, published in collaboration with Accenture, the authors of the report focused on the balance between equity, environmental sustainability and energy security, as well as on preparation for transition.

New to this year’s report are “tailored pathways” that analyze country-specific characteristics, including income level and local energy resources, to provide region-specific recommendations.

As a result, European countries lead the WEF ETI 2024 rankings, with Sweden topping the list, followed by Denmark, Finland, Switzerland and France.

The report also notes that emerging economies such as Brazil and China have made notable progress, although 83% of countries have regressed from last year in at least one of the three dimensions of energy system performance. : security, equity and sustainability, noting that the gap between advanced and developing economies in terms of energy transition continues to narrow, even if disparities remain in terms of investments and regulations.

“This year’s Energy Transition Index delivers a clear message: urgent action is needed. Global decision-makers must take bold action to jump-start the transition to an equitable, secure and sustainable energy future. This is essential for populations, global economies and the fight against climate change,” said Espen Mehlum, director of energy transition intelligence and regional acceleration at the Economic Forum, quoted by the report. Global.
