Key Takeaways

  • Fans are petitioning to save Harry Potter: Magic Awakened due to server shutdown on October 29.
  • The petition has 3,395 signatures, with more being added regularly, but the game may not be saved.

Thousands of concerned fans are signing a petition to keep Harry Potter: Magic Awakened online. For the uninitiated, Harry Potter: Magic Awakened is a collectible card game/RPG set in the Wizarding World universe. It was initially released in China and Taiwan in 2021 before making its worldwide release in the summer of 2023.

Harry Potter: Magic Awakened‘s global release was on June 27, 2023, four months after the massive hit open world action-RPG Hogwarts Legacy hit store shelves. Since its launch, Magic Awakened has attracted a dedicated fan base, but it seems that there aren’t enough of them to justify keeping the servers running. WB recently confirmed that it would be delisting the game immediately and shutting down the Magic Awakened servers on October 29, giving fans mere months to play the game before it’s lost to the void forever.

As one might imagine, Magic Awakened fans are not happy about the shutdown news. What’s worse is that players are not even getting refunds for their purchases, and after October 29, any in-game currency they may have will no longer be available. Disgruntled fans have voiced their concerns on social media, with some going as far as to create a petition on Change.org to ask NetEase Games to pick up the global publishing rights to Harry Potter: Magic Awakened (NetEase publishes the game in China and Taiwan, and those versions will remain live after the October 29 shutdown) and save it from being shut down. The petition has 3,395 signatures at the time of this writing, with 475 added today. New signatures are added with nearly every refresh of the page, indicating that Harry Potter fans really want to see Magic Awakened survive.

Thousands Sign Harry Potter: Magic Awakened Petition

Now, even if the Magic Awakened petition gets thousands more signatures, fans shouldn’t hold their breath that the game will be saved. It seems as though Magic Awakened simply wasn’t making enough money to justify keeping its servers online, which is a shame, but it’s also a risk when it comes to live service games. That’s why gamers should always be cautious about buying microtransactions in live service games, as there’s always the possibility they will be shut down and all the money they spent on them will be wasted.

Fellow Harry Potter mobile game Wizards United was shut down in November 2021 after about two years of service.

This is far from the first time that concerned fans have created a petition about a Harry Potter video game. With news that WB is interested in creating more live service games, fans started a Hogwarts Legacy 2 petition asking that the sequel folllows in the footsteps of its predecessor by being a single-player experience.
