From the dog days of training camp, great ideas can emerge.

For instance, the old-timey mustache of guard Will Hernandez. He grew it during camp, just for something different. But it’s still here and it has made the team.

“There has been a decision made,” Hernandez announced Thursday, to near-The Decision effect. “It’s staying for the season. The people have spoken.”

People? That seemed over the top. Except it wasn’t. The mustache has “created a lot of camaraderie and good times,” Hernandez said, and then “people” started messaging the veteran in approval.

“Really taking the time out of their day to let me know that they liked the mustache, so I thought you know what — you’ve got to give the people what they want,” he said.

In true athlete fashion, Hernandez said the mustache is not done yet. “There is a lot of room for improvement.”

Another place for possible improvement? Hernandez’s future. He is going into the last year of his contract, and after expressing happiness that teammate Hjalte Froholdt just got an extension, Hernandez was asked if he thought he was next for a deal.

“You know this kind of deal, it’s like being at the DMV, you never know.,” Hernandez said. “You might get your number called and all of a sudden it’s two hours later and you’ve got to see what’s going on. Who knows. I honestly don’t think about it. I just play. Whatever happens, happens.”

Now, about the next steps for that mustache …
