Zinedine Zidane himself admits that his choice is not necessarily “original”. Asked by El Chiringuito about his best goal scored during his career, the 1998 world champion opted for his volley from the 2002 Champions League final against Bayer Leverkusen.

His only Champions League

“My best goal, the most important, I think it’s the one against Leverkusen,” said Zinedine Zidane, who converted a high-ball cross from Roberto Carlos. Thanks to this goal, Real Madrid won 2-1, thus securing the Champions League for the ninth time.

Zinedine Zidane had won the Champions League in his first year with Real Madrid, his only final victory in the most prestigious European competition. “It was the trophy that I was missing and we needed this goal to win it,” he said.

After retiring as a Real Madrid player in 2006, Zinedine Zidane returned to the club in 2013, to be Carlo Ancelotti’s assistant. After moving to Castilla, “Zizou” took charge of the Merengue club’s first team in January 2016, winning the Champions League three times between 2016 and 2018.
