Round account this year! The Haute-Provence Observatory celebrates the thirtieth anniversary of the discovery, by Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz, of the first exoplanet: 51-Pegasi-B of its small name, located about 51 light years from the earth, or 500,000 billion kilometers and dust. A discovery made in 1995 by the two Swiss scientists at the High-Provence Observatory (by means of a 1.93 meter diameter telescope with the “Elodie” spectrograph). This will be worth to them to be honored with the 2019 Nobel physics.
In Saint-Michel, there is therefore the Haute-Provence Observatory and the Astro Center: “backed” at the OHP, the astronomy center […] “Ensures a mission to disseminate scientific culture throughout the year and to all audiences”. Especially on the occasion of the Astro summer, a festival whose next edition will take place from July 1 to September 21.
“Exoplanets, the new worlds”
“Astro summer is an event program with four major evenings to punctuate the summer but also open sessions every day for young and old, including observation activities from the sky, planetarium sessions and events organized in partnership with the Haute-Provence Observatory. This year 2025 will be an opportunity to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the discovery of the first exoplanet”, indicates the Astro Center on its site.
Note that a planetarium session is baptized “exoplanets, the new worlds”. Created in collaboration with a researcher from the Observatory of Haute-Provence, animated and commented, it presents the discoveries and scientific results obtained using the observation instruments of the observatory including the famous large telescope of 193 centimeters in diameter.
