French President Emmanuel Macron underlined on Thursday, the eternal character of the “fight for victory” and “the defense of peace”, on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Allies’ victory, on May 8, 1945.
Macron was speaking during a solemn ceremony from the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, in the presence of an important audience, including ministers, elected officials, veterans and citizens.
The French president devoted most of his intervention to review the events that occurred on May 8, 1945 and subsequent reversals, in this case the capitulation of the Nazis, the birth of the United Nations, independence, etc.
Finding the resurgence of the “specter of war”, “the imperialisms and totalitarian behavior” where “the rights of the nations are flouted”, the French president said that “we will never have finished fighting for victory, we will never finish defending peace”.
“It’s not over!” He insisted, taking advantage of the opportunity to plead for a stronger Europe.
“We will never finish asserting the place of our country, of the ideals it has, to defend our independence, our freedom and a stronger Europe,” he argued.
During his intervention, the French president did not fail to highlight the Franco-German reconciliation after the Second World War, evoking a “France and (a) Germany in a Europe of the Enlightenment against the enemies of the Enlightenment”.
At the end of his speech, Macron paid tribute to the unknown soldier by placing a wreath on his grave before rekindling his flame.
Earlier in the afternoon of Thursday, Macron paid tribute to General de Gaulle, under the fun of the Marseillaise, place Clémenceau in Paris and proceeded to a review of the troops aboard a military vehicle.
