Roger Meï died at the age of 90. A native of Hyères (Var), the young teacher with Italian origins will begin his professional career in the northern districts of Marseille. Very quickly, he unionized in SNI (National Union of Teachers) before joining the PCF and his fight for peace in Algeria. It was then in Gardanne (Bouches-du-Rhône) that he exercises his profession.
In 1976, the communist activist was elected general councilor, before winning the town hall the following year. He will remain the first magistrate of the city without discontinuing forty-three years for 2020. Very attached to his commune of adoption and combat, he will be a fierce defender of his population and his working and mining condition, until the mine closed in 2003.
The mayor will be elected deputy in 1996 following the dismissal of Bernard Tapie and will be re -elected to the National Assembly until 2002. Always available to respond to the requests of the inhabitants, he led with his municipality a very appreciated social policy. He was very committed to public services in access to care and culture.
This will result in the creation of a media library, a childhood home, the house of Gardanne, a palliative care unit, as well as the organization of the anti -fascist book fair. Humanity presents his condolences to his family and loved ones.
