When does the colder air species make way for a warmer again?

10:00 updated, today 10:00At the moment we are in a somewhat colder weather phase. On it was no warmer than 14 degrees in many places and on Monday it was fresh with 15 degrees and a present northeast wind. A memory that it is only and every now and then cold pole smell penetrates to . But it can also be hot with the right conditions, such as at the start of this month. Is that a situation that we will soon see again?

Cool, but drying out

The week starts on the fresh side with temperatures of around 14 degrees. The wind comes from a north corner and that is noticeable. The sky is cool, but in the sun and out of the wind it still feels pretty pleasant. Clouds mainly consists of low stacking clouds, which may or may not grow together and form a larger layer.

Due to the absence of periodic rain of significance, the drying out of Dutch soil is increasing. The small, regional showers of last weekend are not enough to reduce the precipitation deficit. In the coming period, a buzzy weather type is not in the picture and in combination with a lot of wind and sun it is very drying. Today (May 5) is the national average precipitation deficit at 62 millimeters – the same level as in the 1976 record year in this period. If the drying weather type persists, this year’s precipitation deficit can rise to similar such as in 1976 and that is still one of the hottest summers since the start of the measurements. The hottest summer is in the name of 2018 and also in that year the precipitation deficit rose rapidly from May. The connection between a (too) soil and a summer with invariably high temperatures is unmistakable.

On the edge of cold air

Cold air, originating from the North Pole, moved in a large in the weekend towards the southern width buddies and is located near the Netherlands this week. Because at the same time there is a high -pressure area above the British islands, the cold air is driven to the Netherlands along the east side of this pressure area. The position of the high -pressure area gets stuck for a while, until at least next weekend. It shows stable in the Netherlands, but with that cool air close. Precipitation does not or hardly reach the country and it is alternately cloudy with a maximum temperature of about 17 degrees. They are fairly normal temperatures for this time of the year.

Towards the end of the week, the cold air moves a little further to the east and is being replaced by a warmer air species. Here it can get a bit warmer, up to 20 degrees in the south on Saturday. The calm weather remains and there will be no major changes in sight in the coming two weeks. High pressure areas still dominate the weather in North-West Europe, while Southern Europe is confronted with low-pressure areas and precipitation time and time again. It is a pattern that always returns from February and maintains itself for a longer period of time.
