Patty Carrollwinner of the BBA photography prize 2023presents Anonymous Women : Domestic Demise to the Gallery BBA from Berlin.
In Domestic DemisePatty Carroll examines the relationship between a woman's identity and her domestic space. Each image in the series reimagines interiors filled with a multitude of settings and objects, often engulfing a lone female figure. Hidden within its environment, the figure represents both the victim and creator of its own domestic identity, exploring themes of societal expectation, obsession, and artifice.
Carroll's imagery is inspired by her upbringing in suburban Chicago and influenced by sources ranging from traditional still lifes to classic films of the 1950s and 1960s. Through these scenes, Carroll highlights the invisible work of housewives , while offering a satirical critique of the ideal of domestic perfection. These works, which require weeks of preparation and feature life-size settings meticulously arranged by the artist, invite viewers to engage with both humorous and darker undertones of the role of women in society.
Domestic Demise by Patty Carroll is an exploration of the intersection of identity, consumer culture, and domestic life, revealing the tension between women's societal aspirations and personal realities.
