The triumph of The Outsiders

Presumably, there is nothing that Angelina Jolie cannot do without success. The musical produced by the 49-year-old actress was nominated for no less than 12 awards for this 77th edition of the Tony Awards, including best musical, best musical comedy book and best performance by an actor in the main role. Finally, it is with the highest award for best musical, but also that of best staging, best lighting and best sound design that the team of The Outsiders is gone back. The musical is adapted from the eponymous novel by SE Hinton, already adapted for the cinema by Francis Ford Coppola in 1983. It tells the story of 14-year-old Ponyboy Curtis, his two brothers and his best friend Johnny – the Greasers – who struggle to get by and stand up to the wealthy rival group of Socs.

Shortly before winning her myriad of Tony Awards, Angelina Jolie took the stage to present the cast of her musical. On this occasion, she delivered a speech of hope for the attention of younger generations. “HE Hinton wrote The Outsiders in high school, and half a century later, this book still speaks to us, she said. Society changes, but the experience of being an outsider is universal. To any young person, to any person, who feels left out, you are not wrong to see what is unfair. You’re not wrong for wanting to find your own way. I hope that the voices of the actors will be raised and that it will encourage the spectators to value theirs.
