One year after its opening in Brest, has the Maison de la Photographie achieved its objectives?

Managed by the Rade Movie association, the Maison de la Photographie, open since November 2023 in the Saint-Martin district of , is intended to be both a space for exhibition, reflection and education in photography and media carried by digital images. Ambitious, the place is already “a success”, according to Dominique Leroux, its artistic director, happy to have been able to multiply exhibitions, conferences, concerts, artist residencies and collaborative projects. Without forgetting the opening of the specialized library, appreciated by image lovers.

“A place that was missing in Brest”

Among the highlights of this first season, the linchpin of the place highlights the “ Freestyle” exhibition, by Marseillais Patrice Ferraz, which had a small effect, with its portraits of actors perfectly suited to the framework of the Short Film Festival. . The same goes for “Tropique de l’Espagne”, another exhibition by the same author on the youth of Mayotte, offered as part of the Pluie d’images festival. “Odyssey 2.0” by Alexia Brunet, a photographic extrapolation of our relationship to digital technologies, has not gone unnoticed either.

Outside the walls, let’s remember the collaborative project carried out with the interns of the Dupuy-de-Lôme high school, exhibited on the high school gates and included in a book; and another, in partnership with Brest métropole habitat (BMH), on the youth of the neighborhoods or municipalities where the social landlord is located (Kérangoff, Gouesnou, Le Conquet, Porspoder), led by the very present Patrice Ferraz, in creation-residence . The House of Photography seems to have found its place, and it is the thousands of visitors who, through the guestbook, express it best: “A place that was missing in Brest”, “Finally! », “Very beautiful place”.

A shadow on the board

In addition to the “Us” exhibition currently visible (until November 16), a beautiful project is underway around the 50th anniversary of the Metropolis, from a social and human angle, with a lot of work on the archives of photographers who have marked the period. It should be completed between December 2024 and February 2025. Work with the Straed collective will see the light of day between February and April. The creation of a digital workshop will be made possible thanks to the project selected as part of the participatory budget of the City of Brest. We also note the project to create a club, membership of which will allow access to openings and the digital workshop in particular.

Shadows on the board? Yes, all the same! A number of volunteers to be developed to ensure availability (every afternoon except Sunday from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.). It’s a call. Sustainable funding must be found to give this place its full mission as an image education platform.
