Between The Weeknd and Lana Del Rey, it’s an artistic friendship that lasts. It all started in the early 2010s when the Canadian singer, then a local R&B sensation on his way to becoming one of the biggest popstars of his generation, fell head over heels for the music video for “Video Games.” “ My sister and I made a video at home, and The Weeknd posted it on his Tumblr page for 11 days in a row. We were like, “Oh my God!” Then [l’animatrice de radio] Fearne Cotton from Radio 1 in London saw it on her Tumblr and decided to play the song once a week ” has recalled Lana Del Rey in 2019, grateful for this huge boost: “ After Fearne played the song every day, everyone [les labels] called me. (…) I was finally able to make the album I wanted “.

An interlude that went viral

Since then, the vaporous voice of Lana Del Rey resonated on The Weeknd’s tracks “Prisoner” (in 2015 for the album “Beauty Behind The Madness”) then the interlude “Stargirl” in 2016 (“Starboy”), before the Canadian returned the favor in lending its velvet tone to the title track “Lust for Life” in 2017. And it is “Stargirl” which is back at the heart of the news today since the piece, lasting barely two minutes, has just surpassed the one billion listens mark on Spotify. This is the 12th time this has happened for The Weeknd and the third time for Lana Del Rey but, more surprisingly, “Stargirl” becomes the first interlude to exceed one billion streams! Note that you have to go further down to discover the second most popular interlude on Spotify: it is “Worldstar Money (Interlude)” by the Japanese-Australian artist Joji, listened to 535 million times.

It must be said that this “Stargirl Interlude” has become, like the song “Die For You”, viral on TikTok in 2022, thus boosting listening to this dreamlike track where the voices of the two stars blend perfectly. The hashtag #Stargirl has more than 193,000 videos. And it is even rumored that a new collaboration between Lana Del Rey and The Weeknd will soon see the light of day. Strongly!
