In 2024, the cantonal statistics office (OCSTAT) recorded 24,835 new holders of a border permit (G permit) in Geneva. A record increase.

Nearly 25,000 new cross-border workers in 2024. For the third consecutive year, the figure exceeds the threshold of 20,000 cross-border workers, informs OCSTAT. The statistic has been recorded since 1989 and it reached new heights this year.

The total and precise number of cross-border workers in Geneva will be known in February. Note that the latest figures dated September show 112,000 active cross-border workers in the canton.

Multiple sectors

Among the new holders of a G permit, 66% are established in Haute-Savoie and 19% in Ain. The remaining holders (15%) live further away from the Geneva border.

The professional sectors which attracted the most new cross-border workers are catering (1,917 people), health and social work (1,891), retail (1,635) and construction (1,258). OCSTAT specifies that the number of cross-border workers recruited by employment agencies, whose activity is not clearly identified, is particularly high (5,404).
