Representatives of the Polisario militia present on Spanish territory expressed their dissatisfaction following the broadcast of the complete map of Morocco during a television program. This is the second time that the separatists have challenged the Iberian media.
It was during the program “Telediario 2” on the Spanish public channel RTVE that the complete map of Morocco, including the Sahara, was presented. The event did not go unnoticed by the representatives of the Polisario in the Iberian country.
The representative of the militia in Spain, nicknamed “Arabi” published a press release to denounce the dissemination of the map of Morocco which does not recognize the division of its territory. The mention Western Sahara and the dashes which split the Kingdom into two have been removed.
The Polisario member not only published a press release to show his irritation, he even sent a letter to the director of information content of RTVE to criticize the decision and spread separatist theories according to which the Sahara would be recognized as an independent territory .
He highlighted that it would be a “violation of international law” even though international law does not recognize Western Sahara as an independent state and while many countries in the world recognize the entire Moroccan territory, including its Sahara, and the recognitions of the self-proclaimed “sadr” are withdrawn one after the other. the others.
According to him, “actions of this type contribute to creating great confusion in public opinion in the Spanish State and serve as support for the narrative defended by Morocco,” while adding that “the territory of Western Sahara has been an occupied territory since 1975”ignoring the pre-1975 period which was the real period of colonization by Spain.
The Polisario member added in his argument that sovereignty would belong to the Sahrawi people, “as recognized by the Court of Justice of the European Union”. This is the second time that the Polisario has protested against the distribution of the complete map of Morocco.
This happened in October 2023, and a communication was also sent to the Spanish channel which was justified by “an error”. In December of the same year, under pressure from the far left in Parliament, the general director of RTVE, Elena Sanchez Caballero, was forced to present her “apologies” to the members of the Polisario.
-Since that date, the Spanish channel has avoided problems by refraining from publishing the same menu. However, RTVE today seems to defy political pressure from the far left by assuming its position.
As a reminder, the question of broadcasting the complete map of Morocco on the Spanish television channel had excited a far-left group which had asked a written question to the government to criticize this change last month.
The parliamentary spokesperson for the far-left party, Enrique Santiago, asked the Spanish government to explain the reasons for using the untruncated map of Morocco, wanting to know if it had given “instructions” to the public channel to use in its programs a map of Morocco with the Sahara.
The party which supports the Polisario separatists and which opposed Spain’s decision to support Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, had at the same time asked the government to ensure that this does not happen again.
The Polisario, which benefits from a certain amount of support in Spain, particularly among the far left or the far right, each of the political groups putting forward different reasons, cannot afford to show its irritation or to rebel in the same way. way in other countries.
Indeed, the separatist militia did not speak out following the publication by the CIA of the complete map of Morocco on its website. The United States, having recognized the Moroccan nature of the Sahara in 2020, under the Trump 1 administration, has just taken a new position just a few hours before Donald Trump takes office for a new term.
