Cleaning European waters and soils from “eternal pollutants” (PFAS) would cost at least 95 billion euros over 20 years under the most favorable conditions. The bill could even reach 2,000 billion euros, according to a survey coordinated by Le Monde.

(Keystone-ATS) The high range “is very probably the most realistic”, writes Le Monde, based on academic work and a survey carried out as part of the “Forever Lobbying Project” media consortium – of which the SSR for Switzerland is a part – on these substances per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances.
Especially since the estimate “does not include the impact of PFAS on our health systems, nor a myriad of negative externalities that are too difficult to quantify,” adds the daily.
This is the continuation of a vast survey published in 2023, which highlighted “at least 23,000 sites polluted” on the continent by these chemical substances prized for their non-stick, water-repellent or stain-resistant properties.
