EMilia Perezthe latest film by Jacques Audiard, shines beyond French borders. The musical thriller, already rewarded at with the jury prize and the best actress prize, received eleven nominations for the Bafta Awards, the British equivalent of the Oscars. The feature film shot in Spanish, which tells the story of the gender transition of a Mexican drug trafficker, is notably nominated in the categories of best film, best non-English language film, best director, best adapted screenplay. Karla Sofía Gascón can hope to win the best actress award; Adriana Paz and Selena Gomez are in the race to be crowned best supporting actress. The only work to have caught the eye of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts: Conclave by Edward Berger, with twelve nominations.

On February 16, the date of the ceremony, the two films will be in competition with The Brutalist (nine nominations), The Substance by the Frenchwoman Coralie Fargeat, Anora by Sean Baker (nominated seven times) or Dune: Part 2 by Denis Villeneuve. Last year, the British Academy awarded the prize for best original screenplay to Anatomy of a fall. Only one award, while Justine Triet’s film was nominated in seven categories.

The Bafta ceremony generally provides a preview of the Oscars, awarded two weeks later in Los Angeles. Jacques Audiard’s UFO can indeed hope for success at the Oscars on March 3. Chosen to represent for the best international film award, Emilia Perez was also shortlisted by the Academy in the categories of Best Sound, Best , Best Song and Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

But Los Angeles is still in the grip of devastating fires, and the televised announcement of the nominations, postponed twice, will take place online on January 23. The gala evening scheduled for March 2 is currently being maintained. The Critics Choice Awards ceremony, which was to be held on Sunday, had to be postponed.
