The papal thriller “Conclave” and the musical comedy by Frenchman Jacques Audiard “Emilia Perez” are leading the nominations for the Bafta, the British film awards, which will be awarded on February 16 in London.
Eleven nominations for “Emilia Pérez”
“Conclave”, directed by German filmmaker Edward Berger, garnered twelve nominations, followed closely by “Emilia Perez”, which received eleven nominations. “The Brutalist”, another film which is likely to count in the awards season, in which Adrien Brody plays an architect who survived the Shoah, is nominated nine times. “Anora,” which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes, is nominated seven times, as is the musical “Wicked.”
These nominations, which set a trend before those of the Oscars, confirm the favorite status of “Emilia Perez”, already a big winner at the Golden Globes where he won four awards in early January. He also received two prizes at Cannes (Jury Prize and the Best Actress Prize). This musical fresco on the gender transition of a Mexican drug trafficker, awarded at Cannes and broadcast on Netflix, is notably nominated in the best film category, best foreign language film, best director for Jacques Audiard, best actress for Karla Sofía Gascón and best supporting actress for Zoé Saldana and for Selena Gomez.

French Coralie Fargeat is the only woman nominated in the best director category for her gory and feminist fable “The Substance”, with also, in addition to the directors of “Conclave” and “Emilia Pérez”, Denis Villeneuve (“Dune II “), Brady Corbet (“The Brutalist”) and Sean Baker (“Anora”). Demi Moore, who won a Golden Globe for her portrayal of a former Hollywood star addicted to a youth serum in “The Substance,” is nominated in the best actress category.
