Two men aged 24 and 33 appear this Monday afternoon before the Thonon Criminal Court for a violent attack that occurred on January 8 in the Emergency Department of the Pays de Savoie Private Hospital (HPPS), in Annemasse, reports “The Dauphiné Libéré».

The events took place around 11 p.m., when one of the men presented himself to the emergency room with work-related injuries. The situation quickly degenerated when his brother, unhappy with the delays in treatment, attacked the nursing staff.

According to prosecutor Xavier Goux-Thiercelin, the man first verbally attacked a caregiver, accusing her of being drunk, before shoving her. The violence intensified when a nurse asked him to leave the treatment area where he had entered without authorization. The latter was pulled by the hair and pushed to the shoulders.

Physical and psychological violence

The toll is heavy: thirteen victims among hospital staff, twelve of whom received ITT lasting from one to six days. Some suffered direct physical violence, others psychological trauma. Even off-duty staff, present for a Christmas meal, were targeted while trying to intervene.

This attack caused a stir at the highest levels of the state, prompting the visit of the Minister of Health Yannick Neuder on January 11. The latter promised “an increase in the harsh sentences for the attackers”.

The two suspects, who presented themselves at the police station the next day to complain about the conditions of their admission and a refusal of treatment, were placed under judicial supervision. They are being prosecuted for “violence against a healthcare professional” and “aggravated violence against five people resulting in three, four and six days of ITT”, specifies the regional daily.
