Heavy snow caused significant transport disruptions in England on Sunday, many flights were canceled in Germany and in the Netherlands.

Suffering from cascading delays in northern Europe, Madrid and Barcelona airports were affected, with some flights running 3.5 hours late. Several centimeters of snow fell in England and Wales overnight from Saturday to Sunday. The disruptions began on Friday evening at Berlin-Brandenburg airport, with 30 flights disrupted, including 17 canceled due to icy conditions in the capital. Mid-afternoon on Sunday, the German meteorological office lifted the severe weather warnings.

At Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, a major European hub, 68 flights were canceled and more than 200 delayed due to snowfall, according to the airport’s website. Cancellations mainly affected European destinations, but long-haul flights to the United States were also affected. In Norway, heavy snowfall is forecast in the south-east but for the moment air traffic disruptions remain light.

The authorities recommend that those who can do so favor teleworking at the start of the week. In Sweden, the meteorological institute placed the majority of the country on yellow and orange alert on Monday and trains were canceled due to the cold in the north of the country.
