Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, 79, was operated on during the night from Monday to Tuesday for an “intracranial hemorrhage” and “is doing well”, announced the Syrian-Lebanese hospital which took care of him .
“The operation took place without complications,” the hospital said in a statement posted on the president’s Instagram account.
The hemorrhage is linked to the domestic accident suffered by Lula on October 19, added the same source.
The left-wing president, who returned to power in 2023, then hit the back of the head during a fall in the toilet, which forced him to undergo a series of examinations and cancel his trip to Russia for the Brics summit.
Headache
Lula went to the Brasilia unit of the Syrian-Lebanese hospital on Monday evening “to carry out imaging after feeling a headache. Magnetic resonance showed an intracranial hemorrhage,” the establishment said.
He was then “transferred to the São Paulo unit of the Syrian-Lebanese Hospital, where he underwent a craniotomy for drainage of the hematoma,” according to the text.
“Currently, the president is doing well, under surveillance in an intensive care unit,” the hospital added.
An updated health bulletin and a press conference from the medical team are planned for Tuesday.
