Hurricane Beryl, which has been sweeping the south-east of the Antilles with maximum force since Tuesday, has caused significant damage and at least four deaths.

It is expected to lose some of its intensity off the coast of Jamaica on Wednesday, according to the US National Hurricane Center (NHC).

Late Monday evening, the NHC classified Beryl as a category 5, the highest on the Saffir-Simpson scale used to describe storm intensity.

This corresponds to winds in excess of 252 km/h and potentially catastrophic effects.
