The very controversial Matt Gaetz, chosen by Donald Trump to be his Minister of Justice, announced Thursday, November 21, that he was renouncing this appointment. On the same social network, the president-elect greeted “recent efforts” of Mr. Gaetz to have his appointment confirmed. He “has a bright future” in front of him, assured Donald Trump.
Matt Gaetz, elected from Florida to the House of Representatives before resigning to join Donald Trump's government, was the subject of an investigation by the House Ethics Committee for alleged sexual offenses, including a relationship with a minor, for illegal drug use, embezzlement of campaign funds and various professional misconduct. Matt Gaetz is accused of having had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl, which he denies, and was the subject of a federal investigation which was dismissed.
His resignation de facto put an end to the House investigation, but elected officials from both sides demanded that the investigation report be at least transmitted to the Senate, which decides on presidential appointments. The Speaker of the House, an ally of Donald Trump, opposed the publication of the report, arguing that it was no longer necessary. During a closed meeting on Wednesday the two camps were unable to agree on the follow-up to be given to this investigation.
