In Guadeloupe, a curfew for minors introduced two months ago has been lifted

The prefecture of Guadeloupe announced, Monday evening June 24, the lifting of the curfew for minors in the municipalities of Pointe-à-Pitre and Abymes, which had been introduced in April to stem an outbreak of crime.

The prefectural decree of April 20, 2024, issued by prefect Xavier Lefort, “no longer in force since June 23 at midnight”said the prefecture in a press release, while welcoming a measure which had “positive effects to curb juvenile delinquency during the two months of its application”.

In Pointe-à-Pitre, “8.9% of the acts observed were committed by minors during the period of application of the decree, compared to 16% in the first quarter, which allows us to return slightly below the level of delinquency for 2023 (9%)”according to the same source.

Over the entire police zone, which notably includes Pointe-à-Pitre and the neighboring commune of Les Abymes, in Grande-Terre, “juvenile delinquency has remained stable (…)but above what was observed in 2023 (6%)”further summarizes the prefectural assessment, also evoking a ” effect (…) visible on general delinquency”, in “drop of 15%” in Pointe-à-Pitre.

“An increasingly young delinquency”

The prefecture also announces the establishment of“partnership actions (…) as part of the local security and delinquency prevention council of Pointe-à-Pitre in conjunction with the city, the justice system and other prevention stakeholders”. Three issues “priority” are covered by an action plan: “Addictions and violence, idleness and loss of confidence and self-esteem”et “parenting support”. “The prefect does not rule out putting back in place [un couvre-feu] depending on the evaluation of this action plan and the evolution of delinquency. »

Applied since April 22 between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m., this measure was ordered by the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, to fight against “a delinquency (…) more and more young and more and more armed”then was renewed and adapted a month later.
